Copper – A material with countless applications

Copper is characterised by its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity together with very good formability and high corrosion resistance. This unique property profile explains the material’s prevalence and variety of applications.
Classic copper applications such as roofs and installation pipes, but to an increasing degree also many “high-tech” products such as leadframes, underwater cable, the high-purity copper matrix of superconductors and copper strips for connectors are just a few examples of the numerous areas of application.

Aurubis produces about 1 million t of cathodes with a copper content of over 99.99 % annually. This primary product is processed into a broad range of products at Aurubis. Aurubis offers many products that can be individually adjusted to customer needs.

Continuous cast wire rod under the brand name AURUBIS ROD is available in coil weights of 3.5-10 t and diameters of 8-23.5 mm. There is AURUBIS FOXROD for special applications, an oxygen-free and directly cast copper wire. AURUBIS SHAPES – copper shapes of different sizes – have been produced at the Hamburg site for over 60 years. The material spectrum extends from application-oriented 5N copper with a high purity level of 99.999 % Cu to high-performance alloys with precise combinations of properties.
Aurubis expanded its large selection of strips (flat rolled products) with the acquisition of Luvata’s Flat Rolled Products division in September 2011 and now offers a nearly complete copper product portfolio. Apart from additional industrial applicationsarchitectural solutions are now part of our selection. These products are produced in our plants in Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and the USA.
Pre-rolled strip from the company Schwermetall, in which Aurubis holds a 50 % investment, is processed in many industrial sectors, e.g. in the construction industry, the automotive, electronics and telecommunications industries and in coin production.

Aurubis Stolberg specializes in precision strips with the most narrow tolerances from copper and copper alloys as well as in shaped and round wires with high coil weights. Specialty profiles for the electrotechnical industry are produced in two of our plants in Switzerland and Belgium.

Aurubis recovers not only copper from the delivered raw materials, but also lead and precious metals such as gold, silver and various platinum group metals. The Group is one of the largest precious metal producers in Europe thanks to its targeted procurement and preparation of precious metal-bearing secondary raw materials such as bullion, skimmings, catalysts, slags and slimes.

The Group is also a leader in recycling: Aurubis Lünen near Dortmund is the most significant copper recycler worldwide and processes complex raw materials. In addition, Aurubis is an important producer of high-purity sulphuric acidIron silicate stone, which is used to secure river embankments, is produced at the Aurubis subsidiary Peute Baustoff GmbH. Selenium – an important substance for the animal feed industry – and lead are also part of the Aurubis Group’s product range; both are produced at Retorte GmbH.
